The Editor and the Host met with a private contractor to build a new high school parking lot.
Sarah Walkingfoot remembers as a young girl that she walked to school, a mere two miles from her home. And back in those days, only two students even had cars. Now here in Trencheville, students drive their cars to school when they live less than a mile away.
“Build it and they will come,” said Joe Pavement. “And they did.”
The parking lot fills up with cars now at the Trenchville High School.
I remember when I was in high school almost everyone rode the bus to school. Only a handful students drove, the Editor said.
“Oh build a parking garage,” said Sam Shopkeeper. “It’s good for the economy. Remember those tax and spend Democrats. Now we have the Build it and They Will Come Republicans.”
Soon Pavement started his contractor building the parking garage three stories high. When he finished, he could hear high school students with their roaring engines coming to the high school. Cars cut through the cornfield six cars wide, cutting a swath toward Trencheville High School. In the distance the Editor and the Host could see the dust rising as 999 cars swarmed onto the little town for the opening day of school.
“Wow look at them come, Pavement said. With the new parking garage we will have plenty of room.”
“Wait a minute,” said Herald Covert. “I thought now we had plenty of room.”
Build it and They Will Come, and they did the Host said. Now the parking garage is full and students have to park on the lawn.
“Aw, don’t worry,” said Pavement. “We can build another story above. That will only cost another $2 million.”
Who will pay for that the Editor said.
“The taxpayers of course. We can just extend the current bond for another 10 years,” Pavement said. “Then they won’t see the increase in taxes. We can lie to them and say — your taxes won’t go up. You will just pay another 10 years on the current bond.”
What a schemer, the Host said. You have certainly found out how to scam the taxpayers.
Of course I won’t write about this because some key advertiser will not want to advertise if I tell the public the truth.
The truth is if we cut taxes, we would spur economic development. Isn’t that why President Bush cut taxes.
“Aw knock off your sarcasm,” said the Editor’s child Brilliant. “You know Bush’s tax cut happened as a political ploy to ensure his second term of office.”
“He’s got a point,” Pavement said. With tax cuts people could have money to spend on fixing their homes, eating at restaurants and BOOM the economy would reach the pinnacle of this century. Build it and They Will Come.”
